The creation of bright displays
of color and flowing shape in functional designs is one of Douglas' greatest
pleasures.
He enjoys experimenting
with color and shapes, even to the point of breaking many pieces just to see
how the colors react to each other.
He often builds his own tools when traditional methods are too confining. These include a glass furnace, pipe warmer, several pipes, an annealer, and a foot-controlled air pipe for working alone. To see some of his hand made equipment, click on the Hotshop or Tools buttons.
His pieces often have a
deeply organic quality. Leaves wrap around these two pieces as if growing out
of the glass.
Recently,
Douglas has been experimenting with using materials other than blocks and molds
to create designs. One such experiment, using wood shards, results in antique
shapes.
