WMS HOME PAGE | LIBRARY TABLE OF CONTENTS Adopting Natural Software (Software of the Mind Series #2) Connection with Nature faded away as humanity removed itself physically and mentally from natural living. Thought replaced direct knowledge, (intuition) and ego replaced the mode of the natural mind. This is becoming increasingly the case not only at the personal level, but also at the collective level of society. The collective group mind of humanity, (the Worldmind) is so named as distinct from that of the Earthmind of Nature, because it is primarily ego-based. This Worldmind of ours is heavily infected by deep seated collective fears, and a largely subconscious desire to return to the paradise of natural living. Pain and confusion in the human collective, renders psychic pressure on us all in every corner of the world. This is part of what the modern spiritual practitioner must effectively deal with. As a collective we must depart from the artificialities of ego and social imagery, and return ourselves to natural ways. This must be done in order to survive the world imbalances brought about by materialism. We must re-identify with Consciousness by recognizing thought and language, as well as their various constructs, to be merely tools and not the focus of living. A return to natural living means a return to the spiritual Intent of God found in Natural Law. In an identification with Consciousness only, will we find ultimate and lasting solutions to the modern condition. Consciousness is the fundamental realm of the soul, of God and Spirit, providing the foundation and motive for the existence of all beings. Of the three aspects of human existence, (body, mind and soul) the mind is the testing ground wherein humanity has had both triumph and tragedy. Our tragedy has been in the ensnarement of society within its own artificial ideas and values, ones that do not actually contribute to right living. The triumph of the human mind has been in its creativity, scientific discovery, philosophical and theosophical realizations, inquisitiveness and drive to progress. All of these forms have their legitimate place in the evolution and enlightenment of our kind. So long as we remember the true nature of thought, language, self image, and social constructs as the tools that they are, we may again make progressive use of them. Even the ego can act as a motivator and protection on a temporary basis, as long as it is continually held in check by a clear realization of its nature. The intelligent seeker will use any and all tools at their disposal, for the purpose of consciousness expansion and self improvement in general. They will take the best of what society has to offer in literature, science, technology, film, religion and philosophy, to wisely synthesize that which works, and discard that which does not. The patterns adopted by the mind such as specific routines of thought, feeling and self image, are primarily memorized and learned behavior. The ego or unnatural mind may then be compared to that of the software of a computer. The brain, body and nervous system are likewise analogous to the physical component, or hardware of a computer. What we learn becomes our "life program", and unfortunately this program is usually dominated by fear and therefore ego at an early age. The ego serves to give the "program" of an individual’s life a direction and purpose, though the purposes of ego are almost universally destructive to self and others. This makes ego analogous to a virus which enters an otherwise sound natural mind, generating there a set of arbitrary instructions for self image and protection which absorbs all available personal Energy. For these reasons ego must be dissolved to allow the body/mind to function correctly, and for natural intelligence to again manifest itself in the mind. Meditation re-establishes our natural inner order, by returning us to the natural mind that is of pure Consciousness at its base. It does this by re-establishing Awareness of Awareness, a state wherein the true self is clearly perceived, and where clarity is progressively maintained. This makes meditation the ultimate "anti-virus" for the software of the mind, one that purges our mental vehicle of the arbitrary flaws and directives of ego. Awareness of Awareness is a state of being that directly perceives not only its own nature, but also the true nature of the universe in general. This is why meditation increases intuitiveness, manifest intelligence and wisdom. These are the inherent properties of the natural mind with which we were born. To return to the purity of self that is Awareness of Awareness, is to return to the natural genius of human Consciousness. This state perceives Truth directly. The mind that perceives directly, has no need of an ego to determine what is supposedly best for its welfare, when the highest welfare is already clearly Seen. Nature has its own precise methods of creative action, which have no need of ego to function with incredible intelligence and wisdom. These methods or modes of action are essentially few in number, for the economy of Nature is one of elegant simplicity. Functioning as the means for optimal survival and right action, and they act to dismantle the ego when recognized and employed by the practitioner. As a basis for daily action they bring greater success in all areas of life. When they are added to the existing practice of Consciousness expansion, they accelerate personal enlightenment greatly. There are nine such modes as follows: "truth”, "honesty", "practicality", "prioritization", "progressiveness", "efficiency", "logic", “spiritual Intent” and "simplicity". The application of these nine, particularly in conjunction with one another, will inevitably result in personal benefit that is far reaching. A detailed description of each of these is as follows: “Truth" has been discussed in some detail in previous chapters. Truth by definition is "that which fundamentally exists", beyond all relative or personal preference and distinction. It is a term and quality of mind that is of universal scope, applying to all places, peoples, times and conditions. To base one’s mind on Truth as a first priority in life is absolutely essential for progressive, intelligent living. It is a consideration which must always provide the ultimate model for daily life beyond all social customs, tradition, and circumstance. This is so because Truth is what Natural Law is and does, providing the very foundation for all philosophy, science and religion. Truth is all that has ever existed, or ever will exist. It is therefore the only basis that will ever have any real value to ourselves and our world. To value anything more than that universal set of constants which compose Truth, is ultimately sheer folly, as there is no greater purpose for living which can ever be found. To find truth look always for the "bottom line" of any conceivable question, to the point where no further questions need be asked to completely satisfy the inquiry. Seek out the cause of any problem or situation rather than its effects, and in so doing find lasting solutions that only the universal can provide. Actively acquire knowledge of the principles of truth through meditation and simple observation of daily events. Be willing to revise your concept of reality, for higher realizations of it are always possible. Embody truth by applying the principles observed in daily living, as well as through a personal identification with consciousness. In this realize for yourself that "truth is its own reward". "Honesty" is an extremely valuable mode of living, primarily because it allows direct access to Truth without deviation. When honesty is not valued, (an attitude which reflects the lack of desire to accept the Truth) personal improvement is greatly hindered. This is so because only in personal honesty can the reality of the self or of any subject be made obvious. Fear, and the ego which arises from it, are the main impediments to honesty. When an individual realizes that Truth is all in existence that matters or has any real use, then the barrier of fear held in place by the ego is challenged. This gives honesty a chance to flourish and grow in the mind, as a dearly valued quality. Honesty provides greater personal intelligence, because it allows an inner simplicity that is more efficient than the labyrinths created by untruthfulness. This is so for one simple reason. The honest mind does not need to remember all the lies that it would otherwise tell, nor does it have to make excuses for those inconsistencies of self which others will invariably uncover, in order to protect the image of the ego. Lies become as weighty burdens upon the body and mind. When this weight is removed through a lifestyle of honesty, an incredible amount of personal Energy is restored. Irritation to the nervous system in the form of worry is then removed. Honesty also provides the ability to believe in the integrity of one’s own self. To be able to trust one’s self is to be able to depend on the mind for accurate information and conclusions. A mind that is inconsistent with others becomes inconsistent with itself. Mental functions then decay and manifest intelligence drops. Until you can trust yourself there is no valid reason why anyone else should trust you either. Honesty is therefore an aspect of personal empowerment that provides inner clarity, dependability, simplicity, strength and a clear perception of Truth, so that personal changes can be readily made. Without honesty personal change is made very difficult. This is because even when the Truth is perceived, it is either ignored or denied. The mind in denial cannot progress. "Practicality" is a mode of living which can determine the actual effectiveness of any action taken. For an action to be practical it must have authentic value to the process of living, and in the context of Natural Law. That which is not of value to life in general, and which is not compatible with the processes of Nature, is ultimately impractical, regardless of its apparent short term benefits. To start a fire one must utilize the three elements of heat, fuel and oxygen, which is the natural reality of combustion. To master the self, it is necessary to address all three of elements of Energy, Awareness and Intent, which is the natural reality of Consciousness. Thus practicality as a mode of "personal software for the mind" is one which considers the real usefulness of any action. The relevance of any action is considered within the larger context of Truth, and a recognition of its principles. It is a mode which views all things in terms of optimum results, considering the best use of Energy and resources for the ultimate welfare of the self. In this context the ego is not a practical mode of the mind, as it wastes Energy and resources for dubious ends. Practical action is one which "does what works", or in other words produces real results that have the greatest value. It is a mode which evaluates all types of actions and approaches, for their actual benefits to the self and the world. The truly practical view is one which focuses on the best potential results in any scenario. These are obtained through the use of the least possible Energy, while using the most appropriate resources. To achieve the most practical results in both the inner and outer worlds, one must also use the best tools for accomplishing the task at hand. This often means employing a wide variety of tools for a single task, just as a carpenter does in the construction of a house. The mind is no exception to this principle, which is why the practitioner should draw from a variety of sources of wisdom from around the world to achieve greater enlightenment. The practical explorer of Consciousness takes the very best nuggets of information from their own experiences, and from the experiences of others, to find a synthesis for personal growth that renders the greatest benefits. Practicality is therefore a mode of mind that always seeks ways to improve itself and the world, (which requires observation and experimentation) so that "doing what works" is clearly determined. "Prioritization" is a means to greater efficiency and right action. It manages personal resources in such a way as to be most effective. To prioritize is to take stock of a group of potential actions to determine which should be initiated first. This points the way to right living, since the mind that understands the true priorities of life, makes progressive decisions of great efficiency. The highest and most progressive priority of life is Truth itself, (and the principles of Consciousness which compose it). The next highest priority is living in accord with Nature and Natural Law, which define the specific parameters through which Consciousness takes action. With these universal priorities in place as one's personal focus, a successful, wise lifestyle is made a reality. To understand priority is to realize the relative importance of things. It is to understand that not all views and philosophies are equally valid in their approach, for their results are not equal. Therefore, one must be discriminative in the use of the Energies and focus of life, to prioritize so as to make the most noble employment of this lifetime. The relative importance of the views of materialism for instance, as compared to a spiritual world view are not equal, because their results are not equal. A mental focus upon prioritization is one which sorts any group of facts as to their overall relative importance. This is an act which results in enhanced practicality, because it reduces the waste of personal Energy. "Progressiveness" is that mode of the mind which continually seeks a better, more beneficial method of action and being. The mind that employs this mode can view any existing system, be it mechanical, political, spiritual, philosophical, scientific or personal and find therein, ways and means to improve that system. The pioneers and revolutionaries of all times, inventors, philosophers and true intellectuals, have all possessed this quality. Progressiveness is an aspect of genius when it is embodied and applied to the self. To be personally progressive is to continually look within for methods to improve the mind, to act with greater effectiveness as a way of living. It also looks within to actively seek out flaws, (untruths) taking immediate action to remedy those flaws. The progressive mind thus seeks to enhance its own clarity, intelligence, wisdom and ability in all ways. It seeks to know itself better, adopting ways of action which create results superior to previous modes of living. The progressive spiritual practitioner will constantly seek a deeper realization of Truth, a more complete alignment with God and their own soul, and a better understanding of Natural Law. They will seek to purify their own Intent so as to live more in accord with universal designs, leaving no aspect of the mind unevaluated or ultimately unchanged. Progressiveness is a mental function that is synonymous to that of growth, for it causes positive change. The progressive mind actively engages the process of personal growth, using all life experiences as vehicles for improvement. In this way the challenges of life no matter how severe, become the means to personal refinement. The very best and worst of what life has to offer, both become inspiration. Progressiveness is positivity in action to greater and greater degrees, as the essence of productive change and higher levels of embodied Intent are acquired. "Efficiency" is a mode that is clearly a major path to right living. The elimination of waste in action, means the increase of exerted force. The efficient flame burns with the greatest heat, the least amount of fuel and for the longest period of time. The body that is efficient lives in health with excellent inner cooperation, high Energy, greater immunity, stamina, strength and adaptability. The mind that is efficient seeks, as it is said, "the shortest distance between A and B" and does not deviate needlessly to "C" or any other point unless necessary. The speed of mental processing is therefore increased, producing more comprehensive results as irrelevant considerations are excluded. Intelligence is thus increased and so is the level of personal clarity, because identification with the relevant is more readily gained by the mind focused on efficiency. Efficiency is in essence the act of accomplishing the greatest possible results, using the least possible Energy or exertion. Efficiency in business implies the elimination of waste in the methods of production, while rendering the best product. Efficiency in spiritual action implies the elimination of waste in personal Energy and method of living, while also maintaining the highest possible level of Consciousness. To be efficient is to find the most productive application of resources given any circumstance or experience, and in the most progressive sense. Ultimately this mode is best employed through the recognition of what consistently renders the most productive results of all, which is Truth itself. Personal efficiency is automatically increased when Consciousness and Natural Law are better understood, because they are in themselves efficient. Matthew Webb
