The public works shop is located in the rear of the fire hall at 900 Alder St. The public works department is responsible for the operation, maintenance and construction of the City Water plant, sewer facilities and the City streets. The department is fully funded by water and sewer service fees and highway fuel taxes.

Streets: The public works department maintains over 15 miles of streets. The City has instituted a "chip-seal" program to hard surface every street in town. That program is about 80% completed. This has greatly reduced the complaints of summer dust and poor road surface. When this program is completed, the City should be able to maintain the chip-seal surface in good condition.

The success of this program has been due to a cooperative agreement between the City and the Union County Public Works Department. Union County has provided their personnel and equipment at cost to the City to accomplish this work.

Water: The public works department maintains the City water system. The City has three producing deep wells, and a single 1,000,000 gallon storage tank. 1999 Water Quality Report

The water system provides un-chlorinated potable water to each household and provides fire protection to the City and to the Boise Cascade Mill.

Sewer: The public works department maintains a sanitary sewer collection and treatment system. The City's sewage is treated in a three cell lagoon. During the winter months the effluent is disinfected with chlorine, de-chlorinated with sulfur dioxide and dispersed into the Grande Ronde River. During the summer months the effluent is irrigated on 60 acres of alfalfa.
